Why we start with your budget

Simple estimates. Clear assumptions. Made for South Africa.

HowMuchSA is a collection of practical, South Africa-focused money calculators. Instead of asking you to begin with technical details, we start with an amount in rands and show an estimate of what it could buy, cover or support.

Use the quick homepage for an instant answer, or choose a detailed calculator to enter an actual electricity tariff, fuel price, interest rate, appliance power rating or other relevant assumption.

HowMuchSA is an independent informational website built to explain everyday South African money trade-offs. It is not affiliated with Eskom, a municipality, a bank or a fuel retailer. Outputs are illustrative and are not professional financial, engineering or lending advice.

We deliberately avoid labelling example input rates as current market prices. Verify the rates and charges that apply to you before making financial decisions.

Why the Money Mirror exists

Numbers become clearer when you can change what they mean without changing the starting amount. The Money Mirror compares a one-off electricity or petrol budget with recurring savings or home-loan payments, while labelling the time period rather than suggesting all four are directly comparable. It's an experiment in making financial assumptions visible.

What we deliberately do differently

There is no compulsory sign-up, no bank connection, no hidden use of an “official” electricity tariff, and no claimed guaranteed investment return. We would rather give you an editable estimate and explain its limitations than claim accuracy we cannot verify.

Who publishes HowMuchSA?

HowMuchSA is an independently operated South African information project. Its purpose is to help readers interpret everyday costs and household money choices, not to sell loans, electricity or investment products. We do not claim professional accreditation or a partnership with any of the suppliers mentioned.

How are the tools and guides prepared?

Our calculator pages use straightforward formulas, editable assumptions and worked examples. Some code, research and writing may be AI-assisted; automation can make mistakes, so examples should be checked against the explanation and current information from the relevant provider. The calculation methodology describes the formulas, checks and important exclusions.

Independent information and future advertising

HowMuchSA does not currently display paid advertisements. If advertising is introduced, ads should be clearly distinguishable from calculator results. Advertising revenue would not mean that a quoted tariff, rate or product is endorsed by us.
