How it works

Understand the estimate

The calculator starts with your monthly repayment and works out the loan amount it could cover at your chosen interest rate and term.

Make it more accurate

Affordability assessments depend on your income, expenses, credit profile and a lender’s lending policy.

The starting figures are examples. Replace them with the rates or prices that apply to you.

Allow for costs beyond the bond repayment

The estimate shows the loan amount your chosen monthly instalment could repay at a given rate over a given term. It is not a pre-approval. Ownership may also mean rates and taxes, levies, insurance, maintenance and a once-off set of transfer and registration costs.

Example: Suppose your maximum monthly housing budget is R15,000, but you expect R3,000 in levies, municipal charges and maintenance allowance. It is more useful to test a R12,000 bond instalment than to input the whole R15,000. That leaves room in your budget for the other housing costs.

Before relying on the estimate

Try an interest rate a few percentage points higher to see how the estimate changes. A long loan term can lower monthly payments yet increase total interest substantially.
