Understand the estimate
Litres are your budget divided by the price per litre. Distance is litres divided by fuel consumption (L/100 km), multiplied by 100. For example, R500 at R22/litre gives 22.7 litres and about 325 km at 7 L/100 km.
Make it more accurate
Use your actual petrol receipt and your car’s real-world average consumption for a better estimate.
The starting figures are examples. Replace them with the rates or prices that apply to you.
Distance is not the same as litres
A petrol budget converts into litres using the pump price. The vehicle then determines possible distance. Your actual consumption changes with traffic, hills, air conditioning, tyres and driving style. An average from your own trips is often more useful than the fuel consumption advertised for the car.
Before relying on the estimate
Allow extra fuel for delays and changes in consumption. Check the pump price before you fill up.
